Have you ever been to a party with no music? Awkward, isn’t it!

The main point of an office party is not only to let your hard-working employees have a great time and a well-earned break, but also to help them to bond with one another as well.

Music is great for parties because it means that people can get up and dance, or even just enjoy tapping their foot to the beat. It’s a great way to fill the silence, however, it also plays an integral part in ensuring that the people in attendance are more to connect with one another and create bonds.

Music builds social connection

Listening to music has been shown to directly affect neurochemicals in the brain, which are linked with social connection and closeness.

Additionally, studies have shown that dancing and singing along to music can trigger the release of endorphins in the brain. Endorphins act on the opioid receptors to reduce pain and boost pleasure, ultimately resulting in a feeling of greater wellbeing. This means that music can cause an entire group of people to experience a rush of positive emotions at the same time, which facilitates social closeness and bonding.

As well as being a shared pleasure, music is thought to contribute to creating a sense of group identity. Researchers compared the social bonds between a small choir, and a much larger one, before and after performing together. They found that the larger choir had the more profound change in social closeness, which suggests that the more people are experiencing music together, the more endorphins are released.

Music is linked to memories

We’ve all had that moment when you hear a song you haven’t heard for a long time, and you’re immediately transported to another time and place. That’s because music and memory have a strong link.

You can use this effect to your advantage if you are planning an office party. By choosing to play music that will hold memories for the majority of the people in attendance, you are likely to evoke memories for them, which in turn gives them something to bond over with their co-workers. This is why tribute bands are so popular for these events, because the audience already knows the songs and will enjoy the experience of seeing their favourite bands together, albeit if it’s a tribute.

Alive Network has a whole host of bands available who are sure to rock your office party, from ABBA and Queen to The Beatles and Take That.

Live music is a unique experience

There’s no doubt that a live music experience is quite different from a recorded one. When you are watching a tribute band together as a group, you are not only evoking your past memories of a song, you are creating an entirely new experience as a group.

You’ll find that you can bond over your shared experience of how much the singer sounded like the original, or even just over the guitarist’s hairdo, in a way that you can’t quite do with recorded music.
